HIKES
There are literally dozens of hikes within a short distance of ADKAframe, ranging from family friendly strolls to strenuous high peak adventures. Be sure to know your limits, experience, and comfort level when deciding on which hikes to tackle, especially between mid-October and mid-April. Also, be sure to be prepared with the right equipment and seek out advice, either from websites, the Adirondack Mountain Club, or local outfitters. There are any number of excellent books highlighting hikes in the Adirondacks, too. The selection of hikes below are some of our favorite, more accessible ones in the area that offer incredible views. Other additional hike options can be found on our Google Map.
Mount Van Hoevenberg
As far as reward rated against effort, this trail from the renovated Mt. Van Hoevenberg Bobsled Center is probably one of the best in the ADK! Expansive views of the High Peaks Range, including the highest peaks in NY. The trail is newly constructed with sustainability in mind and is suitable for families with kids of around 8+. Round trip of just under 5 miles. Exceptional fall color viewing.
Cobble Lookout
A short (30 minutes each way), easy (essentially flat) hike to an incredible view across the Jay Range toward Vermont. Family friendly, but limited parking. Can be muddy in spots, so have the appropriate footwear. Also a great hike for snowshoeing in the winter months.
Hurricane Mountain and Fire Tower
Hurricane and its fire tower can be approached from either the north or south. The northern approach is shorter and less steep than the southern approach. Extensive views of the High Peaks, Whiteface and into Vermont greet you at the summit. The fire tower, built in 1919, is worth the trip alone. If you have the nerve, be sure to climb to the top.
Balanced Rock
Short, yet steep trail to balanced glacial erratic rocks left behind by the last ice age. Wonderful views across the High Peaks and toward Lake Placid. Can be combined with a much longer hike to Pitchoff Mountain
Lake Placid 9’er
If you’re up for a challenge during your stay, consider completing the Lake Placid 9’er. The Lake Placid 9’er is a selection of nine shorter peaks in the Lake Placid area, all with scenic views. Upon completion of the LP 9’er, you can complete the registration form with payment to receive your official LP 9’er patch. It is recommended to complete the hikes in the order listed on their website, but if you’re already in shape, you can modify the order to best suit your schedule as some can be combined into a longer day of hiking.
